Mac vs PC, which is best?

The rivalry between Macs and PCs has been fierce for decades, with strong arguments and passionate fanbases on both sides. Both forms of computer will generally get you the result you’re after, but they go about it in a different manner.

Apple’s iMacs and Macbooks run from their OSX operating system whereas PCs generally run on the Windows operating system. Both computers will get the task done but it depends on your needs, preferences and other devices as to which will be best for you.

Apple Macs

Apple’s Macs are built only by Apple, whereas PCs are built by many different companies. With Apple, you’re purchasing into a whole philosophy as they produce everything – the hardware, software and compatible iPhones, watches and iPads. Because of this, the Apple ecosystem communicates together effectively – you can answer texts from your computer and airdrop files from one device to another.

One of Apple’s greatest strengths is their aesthetically pleasing design in terms of minimalism and attention to detail, which makes them a go-to choice for users who value sleek design such as graphic designers or high end companies. Macs are an all-in-one computer and monitor which is a lot classier on the desktop than PCs which usually have a big black tower and wires connecting to the monitor.

There are fewer options when it comes to Macs – only a limited number of configurations are offered in a ‘best of the best’ approach where you don’t need to worry about deciding between too many choices. For the average computer user who doesn’t know what specific specs they need, having a limited number of options makes things easier and because there are fewer Apple products, there are less viruses created for them than PCs which is another bonus.

Since there is only one manufacturer with Macs, they tend to have new innovations incorporated faster than PCs as they only have to deal with one manufacturer when there is a hardware innovation. Overall, Apple’s clean, simple and straightforward design and operating system is great for a unified and convenient experience if you have other Apple products.

Windows PCs

There is a lot more variety with PCs as there are many major manufacturers creating the hardware. There are hundreds of styles and configuration choices which makes it possible to get exactly what you want, although it might take time to sift through all the options. PC’s biggest advantage is price, as the amount of manufacturers means there are a huge range of options and price points.

If you’re looking at using your computer for gaming, PC is definitely the way to go. Gamers are extremely loyal to PCs with most games available for PC and the added capability to stream games from Xbox and Playstation to your PC. Since PC components are readily available to purchase from a range of manufacturers, many gamers choose to build their own PC because they can control the power, capabilities and design.

For computer enthusiasts who want to have control over specific parts of their computer, windows PCs are a great option as they are so easily customisable with the huge amount of components available to purchase.

The big differences

When deciding between an Apple Mac and a Windows PC, consider the following variables:

Price: It’s hard to make a comparison between the two systems because there are so many PC options. For those on a budget, PC will have an option for your price range however the standard would not be comparable to a Mac.

Customisation: Apple doesn’t allow much choice or options for customization, whereas PCs are completely customisable and upgradeable. I heard an analogy which said Macs are like driving an automatic car and PCs are like driving a manual – Macs have less control which is a positive for some customers and a negative for others, depending on your needs.

Design: Macs ensure a streamlined, high end experience that look and perform well. You are paying for the sleek design and high profile that comes along with the brand, whereas a lot of PCs are chunky, have cords and are not as focused on design.

Compatibility: Consider what other devices you have and want to work with your computer. Apple phones, watches, tablets, airpods and TV are all designed to work together and Windows, Android, Playstation and Xbox products are all designed to work together.

Which is best?

Over the years there are less and less differences between the two systems. It comes down to personal preference, taste and style rather than hardware and software. Think about what you like, what you value and what you use your computer for.

If you’re after a great deal, upgradeability or something for gaming, pick a Windows PC, but if you want to spend a bit more on style, design and simplicity, choose an Apple Mac. There’s no clear answer, it all depends on the user.
